Dr. Hugo von Ziegler (1890 - 1966), art historian who formed an important collection of Swiss drawings, mostly stained glass window designs.

Swiss artists took the lead in Europe in the art of stained glass window design and production from the 15th century, and maintained that lead for almost 200 years. During its medieval beginnings, stained glass was essentially bits of colored glass joined together with lead into a pattern. The effect of color and light was stunning in a theatrical or mystical way. Swiss Renaissance designs were more like paintings; the artist actually painted on the reverse side of the glass, achieving a greater clarity and hence impact of the subject matter. This is a beautiful example of the kind of design that became possible due to the painted technique. Yet, it is laid out in sections like a medieval triptych.
